每次工作面試時最常見的問題就是Tell me about yourself!今天English Shark的Elora老師就來告訴大家如何輕鬆破解這道必考題!

NAILING TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF IN A JOB INTERVIEW

Answering the best “Tell me about yourself” question starts with realizing that answering questions with the same words based on your resume is pointless yet job applicants do it all the time. Remember that interviews are more about making strong matches than proving qualifications. If you weren’t qualified, you wouldn’t be in the room. Here are some tips on how to nail the “Tell me about yourself” interview question.

I am a Fresh Graduate

When you’re asked “tell me about yourself and you already have some job experience, you talk about your career and experiences and why you’re making the move to this company or industry now. But what if you’re a fresh graduate and you don’t have much to talk about?

You should be saying where you graduated from and what course you studied. You can also emphasize your character, resilience, leadership and organizational skills that you practiced when you were studying.

For example, you might start your answer like this:

“I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering a month ago. I chose that field of study because I’ve always been interested in mechanism and robotics, and a couple of family members told me it leads to great career options. One of my key accomplishments during my academic career was designing and building prototypes, and completing long-term durability testing and system-level dynamic analysis, based on research I had done for one of my senior-level classes. This led to an internship that I just wrapped up, so I’m actively looking for a full-time position now.”

I have years of experience.

If you have 1-8 years of experience, start with the moment you graduated and walk them through your employment experience since then.

Here’s an example of how you’d start your interview answer in this situation:

“I graduated with my degree in Mechanical Engineering six years ago and immediately went to work for a Mechanical firm in Taipei. I started a project-based employee and was promoted as a regular employee after 6 months. I am passionate about learning new skills and I have completed a number of training courses. I have developed a strong skill set including Mechanical management expertise. I am eager to make full use of this in a larger working environment.

Highlight Impressive Experience and Accomplishments

As you tell your career story, explain key accomplishments you’ve achieved, the work you’ve done, the skills you’ve learned, and the key career moves you’ve made. It is always worth mentioning if you were promoted and you accomplished something significant like solving a big problem for your last employer. It is great to mention your new skills and challenges you’ve overcome. Get specific! Tell details.

For example, you might start your answer like this:

“I’m a graduate of Marketing in college and I have worked in sales for both XYZ Company and ABC Company for the last 6 years. At XYZ I have achieved an average of 80% sales growth over the 3 years I worked there. At ABC I have consistently achieved as well as exceeded challenging sales targets. My strong networking and relationship management skills have resulted in expanding our customer base by 90%. I am very eager to meet the challenge of developing new territories for your company.”

Final Tip

As a final tip – make sure you go practice everything you plan on saying when the interviewer asks, “what can you tell me about yourself”. And it should not be longer than 2 minutes answer.

Practice makes it better for you to not feel nervous! Be Confident and for sure you’ll Nail it!
